I just installed PeppermintOS’s ICE linux distro on my EEE 900. The user partition is automatically on the 16gb SSD and the OS fits very neatly into the 4gb SSD with plenty of space. It boots pretty quick, but the suspend feature is the fastest Ive ever seen. I can resume from suspend just about as fast as a screensaver would take to turn off. Im a bit paranoid about the fan speed management, though, so I installed EEE applet and set the fan to fastest possible.

The Chrome browser emphasis is snappy and smart. The installed apps are perfect balance of utility with extreme lightweight snappiness. I installed Banshee but everything else is ready to rock.

I installed it off a 1 gig SD card in about 10 minutes. Since I’m so happy with this, I setup a mirror site. This site is hosted off of Amazon Cloudfront, and I got about 1550kB/sec over my home wireless network.

Give Peppermint ICE a try!

This weekend I’ll be trying out some mobile server management as well as evaluating my Asus EEE 900 with eeebuntu tethered to the Cyanogen 5.0.8 ROM on my G1.
Im trying to determine whether this is a feasible setup. I have one 5800mAh battery on the laptop, and six 1200mAh batteries for the G1. I’ll be camping all weekend, so we’ll see how it goes battery wise.

– Update

Well the battery life of my eee 900 isnt fantastic. Problem is that it tries to charge my phone while its connected for usb tether. Alternatively I could use a wifi tether, but then it takes extra battery for the wifi radio. The battery is a 5800mAh unit which is slightly larger than some stock batteries at 4400, but still not sufficient. I am wondering if I can mod my USB cable to kill the charging line. I have many batteries for phone but only one for netbook, so this feature isnt desired.
